With closure of the International Geospatial Society in 2015, formerly the individual member wing of GSDI, the caterogy of GSDI Individual Member was re-introduced as part of the 5-year GSDI Strategy and Action Plan 2015-2020. IGS operation was discontinued due to confusion that arose from some stakeholders, members, supporters and potential sponsors concerning the role and status of IGS within the Association.

GSDI Individual Members collectively have one vote on the GSDI Board of Directors via the 'Director, Individual Member Representative', who is elected for a three-year term from the ranks of all Individual Members in an election process governed by the GSDI Bylaws and Operating Procedures (2015) and overseen by the GSDI President.
